The Tax Man Cometh….a little later this year!
Jan 7, 2011
Because Washington DC will be observing Emancipation Day on April 15th, the deadline for filing your income taxes has been pushed back 3 days to Monday April 18th.
But don't let that small extension be an excuse to procrastinate! Get a head start on that pesky return with some helpful tips we've tracked down for you.
TurboTax has compiled a list of "The 10 Most overlooked Tax Deductions". These include state sales taxes, moving expenses to take your first job, and the child care credit.
One of the more unique tips comes courtesy of Kay Bell from Bankrate.com and her "10 tasty tax tips for 2011", with number one being "Adopt a child" to take advantage of the adoption tax credit! For those of you who don't want to make quite that big a commitment, they offer some more manageable advice such as giving to charity, converting to a Roth IRA, adjusting your withholding, and our personal favorite: Buying a house (We can help you with that one! Check out our awesome listings!).
Finally, if you are looking for unusual deductions, TurboTax offers its "Top 10 Oddball Deductions". These are a few of the more unconventional deductions that have actually been approved for some filers in the past including free beer, pet food, breast augmentation and a girlfriend (don't think those last two are connected, but you never know!).

Brett: How ironic! Emancipation Day - a day meant to celebrate freedom from forced labor, is within three days of tax day - the day the government confiscates a portion of that for which we honestly labor. Hmmmm.
